Copper Replacement Agates are one of Lake Superior's rarest agate varieties. These small agates can only be found in isolated rock piles at the sites of century old copper mines in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula.

Copper replacement agates are thought to have formed when layered impurities of calcite dissolved leaving voids between the chalcedony bands later filled with copper.
