Float Copper Slab 0309-01
Float copper can come in many shapes and forms, with rounded over nuggets being the most common. But some pieces manage to have survived the immense pressure from the glaciers and maintain a rough exterior. This slab shows off the rough exterior and the pure Michigan copper on the inside. This piece measures 11 1/2" L x 4 1/4" W x 1/8" T and weighs 10 ounces.
Michigan Native "Float" Copper Float copper is found throughout the Copper Country of Michigan and many nearby states. Glacial movements thousands of years ago altered the geologic deposits of the native copper by tearing and scouring the land. Copper, along with other rocks, gravel, and sand were constantly tumbled and deposited over large areas of the Upper Midwestern United States. Exposure to the soils, water, and air has oxidized the copper surface a bright green. These specimens with the natural oxidation color, provide a good contrast to the polished copper surface of the cross section.
